An 18 year old young man who had just joined the army came up to the podium to give a brief talk to a group of teenagers. As he spoke he produced his army boots as a visual aid. He called one of the boots ‘trust’ and the other one ‘obey’. He described them as the left and right boot of the Christian life. He only spoke for seven minutes, but his illustration certainly hit home as I have a 19 year old son currently serving in the army.
‘Trust’ and ‘obey’ are, as the young soldier said, is a very good summary of the Christian life, and the answer to trials, temptation, worry, anxiety, fear, failure and all the other struggles of life.
Jesus never said, ‘Don’t worry because there is nothing to worry about.’ He said, ‘Don’t worry in spite of the fact that there is so much to worry about.’ Many times Jesus says to his followers, ‘Do not be afraid’ and ‘Do not worry’ (Luke12).
The answer to fear, worry and the struggles of life is to trust and obey.
