A Papa’s Love…

My in-laws have lived in the same home for over 50 years. Their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren all have grown up in “Nana & Granddads” pool. In the summertime we all still gather at the pool. It’s a place of love, laughter, acceptance, family, memories and of course, food.

Last night, my newest grandson, Aramis joined us at the pool for the first time. He was not happy because of the shots he received the day before. I picked him up and walked with him. His beautiful little eyes looked at me intently. As I looked into his eyes I began to sing. He gave me a smile that said “I love you Papa”. It melted my heart, and of course, I started to cry.

In the midst of his discomfort from his shots, the love and security he felt was all he needed to fall asleep in my arms. Watching Aramis reminded me of something the English clergyman, John Scott once described Gods love as…”a pillow on which we ready our weary heads.”

‘God loves each one of us as if there was only one of us to love,’ wrote St Augustine. If you were the only person who had ever lived, Jesus would have died for you. The love of God, Paul explains in Romans 8, starts with ‘no condemnation’ (v.1) and ends with no separation: nothing ‘will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord’ (v.39).

Regardless of what you might be facing today, God wants to pick you up in his arms and give you the love and comfort you need. If you look closely, I’m certain you see him cry tears of joy.

Yes, he loves you that much…
