Living Life by Design

My latter years of high school and early years of college were tremulous, to say the least. I was mean, hateful and didn’t care what anyone else thought. On Friday nights, my best friend Bill  (who was a bodyguard for the leader of a national hate group) and I would drive around looking for a fight. In Riverside (Ca) in the late 1970’s, early 1980’s, it was commonplace to find groups of guys talking, playing basketball, drinking or smoking together. Bill and I would park our car a block away, wrap our Levi’s jacket around our left arm, walk up to the group and start swinging. It would typically be 4 to 7 guys against just Bill and I. We were young, fierce, angry and black belts in Tae Kwon Do. It was never a contest.

The night my friend took me to church and introduced me to Jesus, my life changed. My anger was gone in an instant. Love beyond measure flooded my body. My life trajectory completely changed. Today, my nickname is, “Mr. Roger’s”. I have been married 37 years, have three beautiful, accomplished adult children and six incredible grandchildren. I have ministered to thousands of people and have had the pleasure of leading people to Christ. I don’t say this to boast, but to show what Christ can do through the power of his Holy Spirit.

Your life can be immensely fruitful, because the Holy Spirit lives within you. You are ‘a temple in whom God lives’ (2 Corinthians 6:16). Just as in the Old Testament God dwelt in the Holy of Holies, so now he dwells in you and me by his Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit produces beautiful fruit in your life (Galatians 5:22–23).
