It is the year 2022, but it feels like what the 1960’s and early 1970’s must have been like. There is so much division, so much anger and hate. One person points at the next as the source of all the nations problems. The Right points at the Left. Republicans point at Democrats. There are no longer any absolutes when determining right from wrong. Even gender is under assault. Everyone longs for personal freedom while our nations soul is trampled in the dirt.

Real freedom can only come through Jesus Christ. His message to us today is that we are not ‘born free’ but that in order to be free, we must be ‘born again’. True freedom is found in a life of faith in Christ.
Our ideas of freedom fail because we do not realise the true nature of our captivity. A belief in freedom as the birthright of a particular group of people always gives birth to malignant nationalism and racism. It has produced some of the gravest evils of recent memory, including Nazism and Apartheid.
Whether free speech, free assembly, free worship, a free conscience, gender freedom, economic freedom or individual freedom, the whole world cries out for the same thing…freedom. However, even if every person on earth had them all, they would still be in slavery. Alternatively, you could have none of the above freedoms and be completely free. The gospel of Christ has within it a promise of freedom that cannot be found anywhere else.
‘Christ has set us free to live a free life’ (Galatians 5:1). Jesus sets us free to live a life of freedom, faith and love through the Spirit. The Christian life is one of faith. Freedom is not something to argue for, or work for. It is not a right either. It is a gift from God through faith in his son, Jesus. There is nothing we can do to earn the right to be called sons & daughters of God.
If it is true, lasting freedom (peace) you seek. There is only one place you can find it…turn to the author, Jesus.
