Life is Like a Postage Stamp…

I’ve been called many things throughout my like. Underachiever is not one of them. When I find something I enjoy doing (or have to do) I never do it ‘part way.’ I suppose that I’m a bit compulsive when it comes to achieving things. I enjoy the process, even when it’s painful. In my mind, success has very little to do with talent and everything to do with stick-to-it-ness.

Our ability to stick to something in life is often the difference between success and failure. It’s been said that, ‘Life is like a box of chocolates…’ I think life is more like a postage stamp. ‘Observe the postage stamp; its usefulness depends on the ability to stick to one thing till it gets there.’ ‘Stickability’ is also a key to the Christian life. If you want to learn to read the Bible, pray, resist evil or whatever else, learn to persevere.

The writer of Hebrews encourages his readers not to be ‘quitters’ but ‘to stick it out’ (vv.34–39, MSG).

If you ask someone in their early 20’s, they will say life is long. If you ask someone in their 80’s, life is short. In the course of a lifetime there will be tests, trials and difficulties. There will also be opportunity, victories and triumph. All require stickability, patience, endurance and perseverance: ‘Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised’ (v.36).

Commit this verse to memory, “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

Today and every day…
