Run the Race…

I still have a few pictures of my friends and I sitting on ‘The Hill’ in High School. The Hill was a large grassy area in the middle of the campus where everyone gathered between classes or at lunch time. There were no chairs or benches. You just found a patch of grass and plopped down. In all the pictures you see my friends sitting on the grass cross legged but I was always pictured laying down. Even though I was active playing tennis or training in Karate, I found sitting very uncomfortable.

Fast forward a few years (ok, maybe 45 years but who’s counting) I still can’t sit with my legs crossed. Even playing with my 3 youngest grandsons on the floor, I find myself having to lay down.

I consider myself reasonably fit (for my age!), as a result of still playing tennis twice a week and being reasonably active. But in other ways, I realised I am not. Physical fitness is a balance of strength, flexibility, aerobic and anaerobic fitness. Some people are exceptionally strong but can’t run to catch a bus. Others are aerobically very fit (they could run a marathon), but are not very strong.

Spiritual fitness too involves a balance between a number of areas in our lives. Having good spiritual balance takes avoiding self-confidence and practicing humble, God-confidence, ensuring that our confidence comes not from our own abilities or successes, but from trusting God.

‘Run the race’ today. But always remember where your strength comes from…
