When I became a Christian many years ago, I was told that I needed to read the Bible. It was from the Bible that I would gain understanding of what my new life entailed. I went to a local Christian bookstore and after looking through numerous Bibles, I purchased a Ryrie study Bible.
Over the years I’ve written in the margins, underlined or highlighted passages. I’m able to look back through the Bible and see times where I faced difficulties and sadness. I can also see times of great joy. When the time comes for me to leave this world I’m sure that I’ve left behind a roadmap for others to follow.
When reading and trying to find your way through the Bible, we are blessed to have two helpers. First, we have the Holy Spirit who lives in us (1 Corinthians 2:2–16). Second, we have the help of our church. It would be foolish to think that the Holy Spirit only speaks to you or me. He has spoken to others throughout history and he continues to speak to his people. Paul prays that ‘you may have power to comprehend, with all the saints’ (Ephesians 3:18, NRSV). Hearing from other saints who have studied Gods Word can be of great benefit. We need to attend a good, Bible believing church in order to grow in our faith, and understanding.
Im not one for new year resolutions, but as we begin this new year (2023), let’s commit to reading our Bible daily, and attending a good, Bible believing church.
