There have been times in my life where I was desperate to see Gods hand. I needed to make a decision and “wait” was not the answer I was looking for. I find that waiting is much more difficult than hearing a firm, “No”. At least with a no, there is a finality to the situation. It’s over…I can move on.
As a grandparent it’s much easier to tell one of my little treasures (teen treasures too) no, than to prolong things with a, “maybe” or “we’ll see”. My little blessings know that Papa’s “Yes” is yes, and his “No” is no (although, I seldom use the word no). They get frustrated when I have to tell them to wait. Children simply don’t do well with wait…neither do adults, for that matter.

In one of my favorite psalms we see David was deeply depressed. He was in ‘a black hole’ – a ‘dungeon’: ‘I sat there in despair, my spirit draining away, my heart heavy, like lead’ (Psalm 143:4, MSG). How did David begin to get himself out of a situation like this when God was telling him to, wait?
First, David chose to think about the positive: ‘I remembered the old days, went over all you’ve done, pondered the ways you’ve worked’ (v.5, MSG).
Secondly, he continued to praise God. Worship can be an oasis in difficult times. David says, ‘I… stretched out my hands to you, as thirsty for you as a desert thirsty for rain’ (v.6, MSG).
Thirdly, David cried out to God for help. He prays, ‘Hurry with your answer, God! I’m nearly at the end of my rope. Don’t turn away; don’t ignore me!’ (v.7, MSG).
Lastly, listen to God for guidance. This is the most difficult thing for Christians to do because we live in a world of instant gratification. We want what we want, and we want it now.
Today especially, if you’re facing a difficult decision, remember to stay positive, continue to praise God, cry out to Him for help, and lastly, listen intently. Gods timing may seem frustrating at times but it is always perfect.
We’ve all heard the words of late night infomercial king, Ron Popeil, “But wait, there’s more!” His words were quite prophetic. When we wait upon the Lord…He always, always rewards us with more.
