A “Titanic Mistake”

A two minute read for busy professionals to start their day (Monday-Friday) with something positive, inspiring, and thought provoking.

One of my favorite movies is Titanic. I love the character “Jack Dawson” played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Jack was such a free spirit and lived life with a childlike wonder. He definitely lived life, in the moment. Thinking of his carefree life always brings a smile to my face. When the actual Titanic set sail in 1912, it was declared to be ‘unsinkable’ because of the new technology used to construct it. The ship’s hull was divided into sixteen watertight compartments. Up to four of these compartments could be damaged or even flooded, and the ship could stay afloat.

Tragically, the Titanic sank on 15 April 1912 at 2.20 am. 1,513 people lost their lives. At the time, it was thought that six of its forward watertight compartments had been ruptured in a collision with an iceberg.

On September 1st, 1985, when the wreck of the Titanic was found lying upright on the ocean floor, there was no sign of the long gash previously thought to have been ripped in the ship’s hull. What they discovered was that damage to only one compartment and faulty rivets affected the other compartments, which ultimately caused the ship to sink.

In life, many people make what is called, a “Titanic Mistake.” They think they can divide their lives into different ‘compartments’ and that what they do in one will not affect the rest.

David prayed for ‘an undivided heart’ (Psalm 86:11). He led the people with ‘integrity of heart’ (78:72). Supremely, Jesus was a ‘man of integrity’ (Matthew 22:16; Mark 12:14).

How can you and I avoid the Titanic mistake and live lives of integrity? As pastor Rick Warren said, ‘A life of integrity is one that is not divided into compartments.’

Today, don’t allow yourself to have a separate set of rules for your work life. Just because something might be ‘acceptable’ at work, doesn’t make it right…
