I’ve been in the mortgage business longer than I care to admit. The range of experience I have dealing with hundreds and hundreds of different clients is vast. I remember one client in particular who was always in a hurry. He would tell me what he wanted and before I could get a word in, he would tell me he had a meeting and we’d have to talk later. When we did talk, again, all he wanted to do was give me a laundry list of why he was frustrated. He didn’t want to take the time to hear my advice or counsel, he just wanted to air his concerns and be on his way.

I used to belong to a church in Orange, California that offered a prayer time every morning at 5:00 AM. I was a young Christian at the time and decided to see what it was all about. The first few times I came, prayed and was ready to be on my way in 10 minutes. Each time the pastor encouraged me to take my time and not just recite a laundry list of ‘stuff.’ He also encouraged me to bring a pillow to cry into. I thought his suggestion was strange, to say the least, but I obliged.

After about a week of struggling, I did away with my list and began speaking from my heart. When that happened the flood gates opened up and I spent raw, one-on-one time with God. He would speak to me and I would listen. There were days when I would spend two hours in His presence just listening.

I learned that if we only speak to God and never take time to listen, we miss out on a truly incredible experience. Our relationship with God is meant to be a two-way conversation. Now when I’m praying (and have the opportunity) I find it helpful to write down thoughts that come into my mind that often come from the Spirit of God.

In a social media saturated age we have many voices that come to us on TV, radio, the Internet, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, email and text message. We have the voices of family, friends and colleagues as well. And sometimes we have the voice of Satan telling us to disbelieve God’s word and to doubt that God has our best interests at heart. So, how do you hear the voice of God in the midst of the noise and distractions of life?

The main way in which God speaks to us is through what he has already spoken in the Scriptures – his ‘teaching’ and ‘commands’ (Psalm 3:1). As you read the Bible, pray that God will speak to you and that you will hear his voice.

Today, as you go about your day don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track.
