For many years my family and I attended the Victorville First Church of the Nazarene. I so loved that church. In front of the pulpit there were benches where parishioners could come forward, kneel and pray. I can remember many times I felt compelled to come forward not to ask for a need but to simply thank God. I was often overwhelmed with tears of gratitude.
What can anyone hope to give God? I’m reminded of the lyrics of a Matt Redman song titled, ‘The Heart of Worship’…”Longing just to bring something that’s of worth that will bless your heart. I’ll bring you more than a song, for a song in itself, is not what you have required. You search much deeper within, through the way things appear, you’re looking into my heart.”In Luke 7:36-50 we see a women who wept so much that she ‘wet his (Jesus’) feet with her tears’ (v.38). In order to wipe his feet, she let her hair down in public (something at the time that was regarded as shameful). She was very emotional but certainly oblivious to what others thought. She did not stop kissing his feet out of deep reverence.
She then poured rare and expensive perfume (normally reserved for the head) on his feet. She loved Jesus with all of her heart. Jesus saw her heart as it was at that moment. He sees everyone’s heart the same way (at the moment)…not looking backwards. He said to her, ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace’ (v.50). As the apostle Paul wrote, ‘The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love’ (Galatians 5:6).
Today, ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with an overflowing love for God, and a fervent love for others. Then show this love in a tangible way…
