It’s hard to believe that I’ve been playing tennis for over 40 years. I still enjoy playing singles against ‘kids’ half my age (sometimes a third). My college coach and I played doubles together for over 20 years. In our late 40’s, early 50’s we would play practice sets against the best players Redlands University had to offer. We never dropped a single set.
Ralph and I communicated on the court exceptionally well. This was one of the things that made us so difficult to beat. We used signals and played patterns. When Ralph would hit a shot, I didn’t have to turn to see where he was going to hit the ball. I knew before he hit it and would get into position for our opponents response. If a ball was returned between us, or over us, one of us would say, “I go”, or “You.” Opponents found it extremely difficult to hit a ball by us or through us because of our positioning and communication.
Good communication is also the key to solving so many of life’s problems. We communicate with God through prayer. God hears all your prayers (Psalm 139:4, 1 John 5:14–15, 1 Peter 3:12) and, in one sense, he answers all your prayers. But we do not always receive what we ask for. When we ask God for something, the response will be ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ or ‘Wait’.
We don’t always get to know the reason for Gods answer, but we need to remember that God sees things from an eternal perspective and that there are some things we may never understand in this life. But, the key is to have communication with God…daily.
What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning? In Psalm 17, David sets us a great example: ‘As for me… I shall be fully satisfied when I awake to find myself beholding your form and having sweet communion with you’ (v.15, AMP). Start each day seeking God’s presence and finding satisfaction in him.
This is the heart of what prayer is all about. It is not just about asking for things; it is about seeking God’s face and enjoying ‘sweet communion with him’. This is the context of David’s request. He cried out to God for help in the face of his enemies (vv.13–14). God heard David’s heartfelt prayer…he will hear yours to.
Today, spend time with God in heartfelt prayer. He’s waiting for you now…
