I have learned so much from the many pastors I have served with. One pastor, in particular, taught me how to hate sin, but love the sinner. On the surface this sounds easy, but in reality it’s incredibly difficult.

I remember one situation where a board member didn’t agree with the pastors decision on a particular matter and began talking behind his back and stirring trouble. Without hesitation the pastor called the board together. We first spent time in prayer together and then with all of us in a circle holding hands, he allowed his righteous indignation to flow. He confronted the board member, called out the sin, gave the board member the opportunity to confess and ask forgiveness. The pastor never wavered and would not move on until the matter was settled.

I was amazed at how our pastor handled this situation. He in no way shied away from the situation but faced it head-on. His anger was righteous. His indignation was justified. It reminded me of David’s words in Psalm 18, ‘The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook… Out of the brightness of his presence… The Lord thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded’ (vv.7,12–13).

In this Psalm we see both the power and the (righteous) anger of the transcendent God: ‘They trembled because he was angry’ (v.7). God’s anger (as was our pastors) was a personal reaction against sin.

Yet, this is also a psalm where David expresses his intimate friendship with God. It begins, ‘I love you, O Lord, my strength’ (v.1). David did not take it for granted. He understood the immense privilege of having an intimate friendship with God.

Today, as you go about your day, don’t be afraid to allow righteous indignation to well up inside you because of sin. Stand firm for what is right…
